Route planning becomes clearer when four different questions stay separate. What can the bicycle reliably do? Where does the current official route run? What will weather and surface probably do today? How does the rider leave safely if one assumption fails? Each layer uses different evidence and changes on a different schedule.

1. Describe the machine without marketing

Our bicycle pages review categories rather than inventing test rides of named models. We start with observable design decisions: riding position, steering intent, tyre clearance, suspension, braking, gearing, luggage mounts, total mass and service requirements. We then ask which recurring surface or job rewards those choices.

This produces a trade-off, not a score. A light cross-country bike converts effort efficiently but may offer less descending margin. A tourer carries panniers calmly but is not a technical trail bike. An e‑MTB supports climbing while adding mass, charging and system-specific service. Readers still need a proper fit check and a real demonstration ride before buying.

2. Find the route owner

A search result, social post or shared track is discovery material. The planning anchor should be the current official tourism, route-operator or public route-planner page. We record its stated distance, ascent, direction and stage structure with a source-check date. We avoid inventing openings, prices, services or difficulty labels that the source does not support.

Even official information has limits. A route description explains the intended line; it cannot guarantee tomorrow’s condition. The useful hierarchy on the ground is current closure, land-manager instruction and sign first, current official route material second, then the downloaded map. An old GPX never overrides a barrier.

3. Convert totals into daily load

Total kilometres hide the work. Divide a journey into days using ascent, surface, likely moving time, stops and the group’s recent comparable experience. Add the effect of luggage and consecutive-day fatigue. The least experienced rider sets the technical ceiling; the rider with the least recovery margin helps set the stage length.

4. Treat weather as a route component

Weather changes more than clothing. Rain affects grip, braking, mud and speed. Heat changes water range. Wind changes exposure and energy use. Cold affects hands, batteries and judgement. Check conditions representative of the higher terrain and the hours of the ride, then choose a preplanned lower or shorter line when the forecast crosses the group’s limit.

After a storm, expect official information to evolve. Give land managers time to inspect damage. Never bypass forestry barriers, create a line around a soft section or assume another rider’s track proves access.

5. Build the exit before the route

Every day gets at least one retreat that has been inspected as carefully as the intended line. A thin map line may conceal a steep, private or unrideable track; prefer known public roads, signed routes or verified transport. Note the last sensible decision point, because the useful exit is often earlier than the emergency.

Transport requires its own confirmation: bicycle capacity, reservations, operating times, platform access and restrictions for loaded or assisted bicycles can change. An unverified train symbol is not an exit plan.

6. Run a departure-day gate

  1. Open the official route page and current notices.
  2. Check the weather at route elevation and during riding hours.
  3. Confirm the first exit, essential service and transport condition.
  4. Inspect tyres, brakes, drivetrain, fasteners, lights and battery.
  5. Save maps offline and tell someone the intended finish.
  6. Shorten early if the evidence is worse than the plan.
The core ruleA plan is successful when it supports a good decision. Reaching the original endpoint is optional; preserving people, access and the next day is not.
